Since the academic year 2015-2016, St. Paul’s Seminary has been accommodating the Centre for Philosophy, the Philosophate of the Madurai Ecclesiastical Province, established in 2006 and situated earlier in the premises of Christ Hall Seminary, Karumathur, Madurai. The curriculum offered at the Centre is for two years, at the end of which the students obtain a Baccalaureate in Philosophy. The courses on Western, Indian, and Tamil Schools of Thought, principle disciplines of systematic Philosophy such as Logic, Epistemology, Moral Philosophy, Philosophy of God and Religions, Philosophy of Nature and Eco-sophy, philosophy of Being, Spiritual Philosophy, Aesthetics, Philosophy of science, Philosophical Hermeneutics, Political Philosophy, Introduction to Marxism, Philosophy of Education, Philosophy of Liberation and Sub-alterns, Philosophy of Communication and Technology, social sciences such as Psychology, Sociology and Scientific Methodology, and a brief survey about Scriptures and Catechetics form the curriculum. The programs such as the symposia, the workshops and the philosophising on current issues supplement to the curriculum and help the students philosophise in the context of current existential realities. As far as the extra-curricular activities are concerned the students are engaged with oratories, academies, and classes on English and Latin, type-writing, vocals, and music. Every year the students are taken on an exposure camp which functions as a forum for group dynamics, living, learning, and sharing. Throughout the year on Sundays the students are given an impetus for pastoral care through their ministry at homes for the children and the aged, HIV infected persons, and at the villages. Currently the Centre for Philosophy, whose Vice-Rector is Rev. Fr. M. Peter Amaladoss and Dean is Rev. Fr. V. Gnanamuthu, houses 35 students, who live in four animation groups, which are moderated by their animators, who are also the teaching staff at the Centre.
